The concept that emphasizes how gender influences subject choices in schools is gender role allocation. This idea stems from the understanding that societal norms and expectations regarding gender roles shape the attitudes and behaviors of students. Historically, certain subjects have been associated with particular genders due to cultural stereotypes; for example, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields have often been viewed as masculine, while the arts and humanities are frequently seen as more feminine.

As a result, students may consciously or subconsciously feel pressured to pursue subjects that align with these gendered expectations, leading to gender disparities in subject choices. This reflects the broader implications of socialization and the ways in which educational experiences can reinforce traditional gender roles.

Other concepts such as meritocracy of education suggest that success is based solely on individual effort and ability, not accounting for the influence of gender. The hidden curriculum refers to the unintended lessons learned in schools, which may include gendered expectations, but it does not directly focus on the choices made by students regarding subjects. Similarly, equal opportunities policy aims to provide a fair educational environment but does not inherently address why certain gendered patterns in subject choices persist.
